Naina Devi Temple Nainital: Full Guide (History, Significance & How to Reach)

The first thing that comes to mind when I mention Nainital is the dazzling lake, but the true identity of that lake, its charm, and its tranquillity, lies in the shrine of Maa Naina Devi Temple. The last time I visited Nainital, the Mall Road crowds exhausted me. But as soon as I reached the temple’s courtyard, I felt as if time had stopped and all my tension simply vanished.
If you’re visiting for the first time or have been before, this guide will help you see the place from a new perspective and make your trip even better.
History and mythological significance of Naina Devi Temple
Naina Devi Temple is considered one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of India. There is a very emotional story behind this, which is found in our Puranas. According to the story, when Mata Sati, saddened by the insult in her father’s yagya, offered herself in the fire, then Lord Shiva took her body and started roaming around the world. Seeing her grief and anger, Lord Vishnu divided Sati’s body into many pieces with his Sudarshan Chakra to save the universe.

It is believed that the eyes of Sati fell at the site where this magnificent temple stands today. Therefore, the site became known as “Naina Devi.” The temple’s womb-house contains not a large statue, but rather the form of two of Sati’s eyes. Looking at those eyes, it seems as if Sati is always protecting her devotees.
It is also a historical fact that in 1880’s, a terrible landslide completely destroyed the old temple, but the immense faith of the devotees got it rebuilt.
